In 1972, during the devastating Rapid City, SD floods in which over 200 people died, Bob was appointed the Coordinator of all Search and Rescue Operations and subsequent Recovery Operations because of his knowledge and experience in disaster management. After completing a quarter century of active military service in the Regular Army, Bob transferred to the New York Army Guard.
